How to care for your dentures

When the time comes for make an investment in dentures, make sure you take the proper steps to ensure their long life. At Denture repair Lab, we have put together some suggestions on how to better care for your investment.

Below are some of the top helpful tips on how to properly maintain your dentures:

  1. Wash your dentures daily! This is very important in order to not infect the dentures with a virus or bacteria that can spread to your mouth. Use direction from your denture provider or use denture cleanser, hand soap, or light dish soap. Make sure to not use toothpaste on your dentures, as it is too abrasive.
  2. When cleaning, use the right tools. There are special scrubbers and brushes that are used for the cleaning of your dentures. If you do not have a specialized brush, then you can use a new toothbrush that has hard bristles. For denture with a soft reline use only soft brushes.
  3. Don’t allow your dentures to dry out. Make sure to soak them in water. Do not leave dentures in soaking solutions for too long, as it may discolorate the denture. When your dentures dry out, they have a greater chance of cracking. These cracks can be very tiny at first and once they grow, it may be too late.
  4. Take your dentures out at night to help relieve pressure on your dentures and gums. This is mainly only for the adjustment period.
  5. When handling your dentures handle them over water or a very soft surface so that if you drop them they will not break on a hard surface. Fold a towel and place on top of the hard surface.
  6. To keep everything clean, take a soft brush to your mouth’s inside before inserting your dentures. This ensures that there will be no food particles that can get lodged in your dentures for a long period of time. This is especially true if you have a partial denture. Don’t forget to continue to brush your remaining teeth!
  7. During wear, do not use tooth picks.
  8. For storage, make certain not to leave them out for dogs or children. To a dog your dentures look like a fun chew toy!
  9. Continue to see your dentist. Just because you no longer may have teeth, does not mean you no longer see your dentist. Special attention must still be taken for gum care and the proper fitting of your dentures.
