What are Overdentures?

What are Overdentures?

Overdentures offer a superior replacement-teeth solution to traditional dentures for many people, but you may not be familiar with the term.  What exactly are overdentures?

Overdentures work with dental implants, and are used to replace single or multiple missing teeth.  There are several different kinds of overdentures.

Overdentures may be removable or fixed.  Removable overdentures may rest directly on the gums supported by implants, or may be attached to a bar which connects with the implants.  Removable overdentures are more stable than conventional dentures, although not as stable as fixed overdentures.

Fixed overdentures utilize a one-piece framework which is attached to the implants.  These are the most stable of all.  They cannot be removed by the wearer, but can be removed by a Dental Clinician.  They feel and act the most like natural teeth.  Depending on the health of the patient’s gums and bones, overdentures can last for ten to fifteen years.

If the problem teeth still have good roots, the teeth’s natural roots can be used as an anchoring support for the denture.  A root canal is performed first to remove the nerves.  This option is preferred by most dentists, because keeping as much of the natural tooth in any form is always best.

If the root cannot be used as support, titanium or similar material is implanted directly into the jawbone.  The bone fuses tightly to the support, creating an anchor for a secure dental replacement.  Overdentures offer a much more stable connection compared to traditional dentures.  This allows the patient to chew more effectively, which in turn lead to better digestion.  And, of course, more stable dentures feel better.  Another advantage is that implants stimulate the bone and slows bone loss, which can occur with missing teeth.  When jaw bones are not stimulated by natural or implanted roots, the face may begin to appear sunken and aged.

Most people are good candidates for overdentures.  Ideally the patient would have healthy gums, strong enough bones, and not have persistent grinding habits.  Overdentures are the most comfortable and natural tooth replacement solution.  Ask your dentist or prosthodontist if overdentures are a good option for you.

The long-term health and success of your implant supported overdentures depends on you and on your ability to keep them clean. Like regular dentures and partials, overdentures can break, crack or wear out over the years. Overdentures are made with acrylic teeth, which can chip, crack or break off the palate. Denture wearers do not need to panic, as overdentures are repairable. Overdenture teeth can be replaced or repaired and breaks and cracks can be fixed as well. The overdentures attachments must be protected during repair time, to make sure that fine acrylic powders do not get inside of the attachment. Hence you should not try to repair overdentures yourself. Always select only professional denture repair lab that specialized in overdenture repair and restorations.
